US News & World Report’s Best Colleges Guide 2005: AU Second in region as a "Great School at a Great Price” One of the most commonly quoted publications that claims to assess quality in higher education is the annual college ranking issue of US News & World Report.
For the 17th consecutive year, Alfred University ranks among the top 20 master’s level institutions in the northern region, according to the publication.
In addition, the 2005 edition of US News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” guide puts Alfred University second on the list of “Great Schools at a Great Price in the North, ” using academic quality and affordability as a guide.
According to the publication, “The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. We considered only schools ranked in the top half of their categories, since we believe that the most significant values are among colleges that are above average academically.”
AU’s internationally-known ceramics M.F.A. program was ranked number one in the nation by US News & World Report in its last three reviews.
The 2005 guide also lists AU's undergraduate materials science program as being 21st in the country among those schools that also offer master's and Ph.D. programs in that field.
Of its methodology in ranking schools, US News & World Report says it weighs the following:
assessment by administrators at peer institutions retention of students faculty resources student selectivity financial resources alumni giving "graduation rate performance," the difference between the proportion of students expected to graduate and the proportion who actually do Peterson's Competitive Colleges, 2003-2004 Alfred University is among nearly 401 colleges selected for inclusion in Peterson's Competitive Colleges. This guide assesses the competitiveness of each college by entering-class statistics (grade-point average, class rank, test scores) and by the college's acceptance rate.
The guide notes: "The...colleges selected for inclusion… routinely attract and admit an above-average share of the nation's high-achieving students."
Excerpts:
“Alfred University provides its students an outstanding academic experience in an up-close and personal environment.”
“Through research, co-op and internship opportunities, active learning, and study abroad, students gain extensive knowledge that makes them more marketable in graduate professional school placement or securing employment within the workforce.”
“All students are encouraged to value diversity, tolerance, and interdisciplinary work.” The Unofficial, Unbiased Insider’s Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges (Kaplan Publishing)- 2004 Edition Alfred University is one of 328 colleges (chosen from among 3,000 accredited institutions nationwide) included in Kaplan’s Most Interesting Colleges. The list includes a wide assortment of schools, from Ivy League giants like Harvard, Yale and MIT, to smaller, lesser-known institutions.
The guide’s authors say their list of “most interesting” colleges came from “inside information we collect from guidance counselors and students, by institutional data such as enrollment figures and selectivity, and by current events at each college.” The authors also checked with high school guidance counselors to see which schools they’re always talking to students about.
Excerpts:
“Alfred is the top school in the nation for the ceramic engineering. There’s a great mix of scientists, artists, and business kids.”
“At this ‘friendly little school,’ everyone is accessible from the professors to the janitors,” a senior remarks. The student/faculty ratio is 12:1, and class sizes are small. “You are very close with our professors,” says one student.”
“Cooperative education at Alfred is the real deal, “not an internship or a summer program.” .... Students work for five to eight months, receiving pay and/or credit for their hands-on experience. Opportunities range from the fields of ceramic engineering to journalism, with participating companies including IBM and Walt Disney World.” The Fiske Guide to Colleges, 2004 In this volume USA Today calls “the best college guide you can buy,” author Edward B. Fiske names Alfred University one of the 300 “best and most interesting colleges” in North America.
Compiled from surveys of thousands of students and administrators, a staff of journalists and freelance writers collated the information and wrote essays that were edited by Edward B. Fiske, former Education Editor of The New York Times. The 20-year-old guide is known for its “hip and straightforward” descriptions of both the academic and social environments of the schools it reviews.
Excerpts about AU:
“I feel that there is a cloning process going on at schools across America,” opines one student. “Students look alike, act alike, think alike, and dress alike. Alfred is a refreshing exception to this rule.”
“Innovation not only shapes the curriculum, but also has a profound effect on campus life. Small classes and friendly competition support this diversity while encouraging individuals to succeed.”
“Students say faculty members really want them to succeed both in class and in the ‘real world’. ‘Professors are very involved with the students and are clearly interested in teaching,’ brags one junior….The quality of teaching is described as very high. ‘Our students are almost always taught by professors with Ph.D.s,’ explains a physics major.”
“The university stresses its commitment to helping undergrads plan their future, and the academic advising and career planning services are strong enough for Alfred to deliver on its promise.”
“Campus security is good, according to most. ‘This town is very safe,’ says one female student. ‘I do not even think twice about walking around at night.”
“Strongest programs: Ceramic Engineering, Art, Business, Sciences, Psychology, English.”
“The 232-acre campus is set in the village of Alfred in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Western New York. ‘Our location is breathtakingly beautiful,’ says a senior…The village of Alfred is quaint, with sweet shops, children’s parks and bicycle collections.” Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College that is Best for You, 2003 Washington Post education writer Jay Mathews asked guidance counselors and teachers who read his column to tell him which colleges are the “lesser-known jewels” that students “fall in love with once they get to know them.”
Alfred University was mentioned often enough to make Mathews’ list of the “top 100 outstanding (but underappreciated) colleges” in the U.S.
Mathews wrote his book to “dispel the myths about what makes a good undergraduate experience.” ”Your friends,” he writes, “may tell you being admitted to a brand-name school will guarantee a life of happiness, but all the available evidence suggests they are wrong.” He concludes that “it is your heart and soul—character, hard work, and intelligence---that will make your fortune, not the reputation of the college you attend.”
Former Secretary of Education Richard Riley says Mathews’ guide “offers refreshing insights and makes the important point that getting into the ‘best’ college is less important than choosing the college that brings out the best in every student.”
The schools on Mathews’ list, he says, “are excellent and deserve to be put on your list if they offer something that pleases you.”
Excerpts:
Alfred University is noted for “its majors in ceramic sciences and engineering, fine arts, and business administration” and its “great departments in visual arts and dance.”
AU “provides a tremendous amount of personal attention…in an atmosphere that welcomes differences and celebrates the artistic uniqueness that students bring to campus.” Princeton Review: The Best 357 Colleges --2005 According to the Princeton Review, “Alfred provides a cozy community that students, professors and administration enjoy. One student says, ‘There is excellent interaction between students and professors; and with small classes, the faculty can devote more time to each individual student.’ Alfred is the kind of place where ‘about half our professors, maybe more, want to go by first name.’”
About the student body: “There are so many different social groups here. You have sporty kids, walking tapestries dreaded neo-hippies, artsy indie rock kids, D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) kids, intellectuals [and] engineering nerds… everyone can find their place at Alfred.”
The Inside Word: “There’s no questioning the high quality of academics at Alfred, especially in their internationally known ceramics program…If you are a back-to-nature type looking for a challenging academic environment, AU could be just what the doctor ordered.” The Yale Daily News’ Insiders Guide to the Colleges, 2004—Students on Campus Tell You What You Really Want to Know Alfred University is one of only 310 schools--chosen from more than 2,000 four-year degree granting institutions nationwide--to be reviewed in the Insiders Guide to Colleges 2004, now in its 30th edition.
Editors say the Guide --researched and written by undergraduate college students at Yale University, and one of the biggest-selling college guides available—“includes colleges we believe to be among the best and most noteworthy in North America.” The main factor for selecting schools is academic quality. The editors boast that this guide offers “just the unvarnished truth about campus life told directly by the students who live it.”
Excerpts about AU:
“Alfred draws in a wide range of students from all sorts of backgrounds. In this small town, students band together and experience what has been described as “a great four years.”
“Alfred…tends always to be on the cutting edge. ‘Our campus is constantly being remodeled—it’s great!’ boasted one student.”
“Professors teach not only all lectures, but conduct all discussion sessions as well. The small-scale learning environment fosters a supportive environment…and the close-knit community allows for students to participate more confidently in their education…Professors and students are often seen meeting for a meal or coffee at a local eatery. At Alfred, learning is not confined to the classroom.” College Board's Admitted Students Questionnaire (ASQ) Every other year, Alfred University administers the College Board’s ASQ survey to all accepted students. The survey is designed to find out what influenced their decision to attend AU (or not), what their other college choices were, and to find out how they felt about the AU admissions process in general.
Here’s a sample of comments from both groups; those who chose to attend AU, and those who did not. The survey is from the 2001 admitted class.
Comments from students who chose to enroll at AU:
- Once I visited Alfred and felt the warmth of the school community, I knew it was the only place, and I didn’t apply anywhere else.
- Alfred is very welcoming! I really appreciate it.
- Personalized acceptance letters were very cool.
- Renee Orlick is the best admissions counselor at Alfred. She is friendly, caring, and made me feel like “college material.”
- You were very personal and treated me like a person, not a number. That’s why I enrolled here.
- A great school in all aspects.
- I really liked how well the admissions officers kept in touch, sending emails and letters and even Christmas cards! It made me feel as though they
truly cared about me coming to AU.
- Alfred is very personal and made me feel that I would be an important part of the community.
Comments from students who chose not to enroll at AU:
- Your admissions staff was without question the most friendly and helpful of all the schools I applied to, combined! I actually feel bad about not
attending Alfred, however I convinced my best friend to attend and he will be going there this fall. (This person chose to enroll at Syracuse University)
- I think Alfred is an excellent college, but I don’t think I am ready to move so far away yet, and I am a city girl. (Chose to attend the Art Institute of Boston)
- The NYC rep. is the BEST!!! Too bad your college didn’t have the major I wanted. (Chose to attend SUNY Purchase)
- Excellent correspondence that conveyed a sense of warmth and caring about prospective students. (Chose to attend Erskine College)
- You were extremely helpful and supportive, and I’m sorry I will not be able to attend. (Chose to attend Johns Hopkins University)
- The portfolio review at Alfred was the most informative of any I had. I was given a strategy for my slide presentation as well as suggestions for
strengthening my selections. If only Alfred was in a more cosmopolitan area…I probably would have attended. (Chose to attend Maryland Institute, College of Art)
- I am entering Geneseo in the fall as a Business Administration Major. But after four years at Geneseo, I look to apply to Alfred for my final year
for my MBA. (SUNY Geneseo)
- I really liked Alfred a lot. It was a very difficult decision to make! (Chose to attend Clarkson)
Graduate Success The true measure of any college or university is the people it produces--its alumni. Alfred University boasts an impressive list of graduates, represented by leaders in business, the arts, education, research and other fields. The most recent survey of Alfred graduates revealed that one year after graduation, 93% of all respondents were either employed or in graduate school. The response rate was 75%.
